Some foods to avoid while breastfeeding includes alcohol, coffee, highly processed foods, and foods you are allergic to.

1. Alcohol.

Alcohol is at top of the list on things you should avoid if you are a breastfeeding mother. It is at the top of the list because it negatively affects a newborn and the mother. For that reason, if a breastfeeding mother takes alcohol, she should not breastfeed until is sure all the alcohol content has left her system.

If you care about your health and that of your child, you should be aware that alcohol is not good for you during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Alcohol is also said to affect milk production, which may be a problem for the baby.

To be on the safe side, do away with alcohol completely until when you are no longer breastfeeding.

2. Herbs.

During breastfeeding, you should avoid herbs. Be it medicinal or supplemental. Talk to your doctor before taking anything. 

The problem with supplements greatly occurs when women want to lose weight after pregnancy. They look for different programs online or in stores, including slimming teas. The huge problem with these supplements is that they are not FDA-certified and have no known or provided research showing that they do not affect breastfeeding mothers and their babies.

3. Mercury-containing foods

It is also important to avoid foods rich in mercury during the breastfeeding period. Mostly, some types of fish include mercury, so it is important to watch the fish you eat. If you are unsure about anything. Talk to your doctor about the same. Mercury is toxic, particularly to children who are more vulnerable to mercury poisoning.

Tilefish, swordfish, shark, king mackerel, bigeye tuna, marlin, and orange roughy are examples of common fish that may contain mercury. Mercury can impair children’s intellectual, motor, speech, and language development.

As much as you need protein, omega 3, and iron during breastfeeding, ensure you do not eat fish that contains mercury.

Highly processed are another type of foods to avoid during breastfeeding. Avoid highly processed foods while breastfeeding such as sugary drinks, chocolate, candies, sauces, dressings, ice cream, frozen desserts, bakery products, and fast foods.

It is important to eat a balanced diet while breastfeeding. While doing so, avoid highly processed foods or with too much sugar. 

5. Coffee/caffeine.

Other recommended foods to avoid during breastfeeding is coffee and anything containing caffeine. If you are a breastfeeding mother, limit your coffee consumption because too much coffee can cause sleeping problems, restlessness, and anxiety in your child. Coffee can also cause dizziness and a rapid heartbeat in pregnant women.

Avoid coffee if you want your baby to sleep well and have peace of mind. Nobody wants to deal with a crying baby who is restless, irritable, and sleepless. And you can avoid it by simply avoiding or limiting your coffee consumption.

6. Foods you are allergic to.

Some people have food allergies. Kindly, if you are allergic to any kind of food, do not eat it while breastfeeding. Babies can also have allergies to foods that the mum eats while breastfeeding. 

Some people are allergic to proteins, and because they heard that proteins are good for the baby, they now assume the negative consequences and eat the food in the name of “doing it for the baby.” Please do not do this because, even if a baby has never been fed formula or any other meal, they can be affected by food allergies due to the contents of your breast milk.
